|Donald W. Zantop Emerging Leader Award and Memorial Lecture|
Donald W. Zantop, DVM (MSU ’76), Dipl. ABVP (Avian) was a small animal, avian and exotic animal practitioner and co-owner of the Fallston Veterinary Clinic in Fallston, VA. Dr. Zantop was recognized and valued by his colleagues and clients alike as a leader in avian medicine and surgery. He was a long time member of the Association of Avian Veterinarians, was the Avian Specialty Examination Chair for the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners as well as past President of the Association of Avian Veterinarians, the Mid-Atlantic States Association of Avian Veterinarians. Dr. Zantop enjoyed teaching and inspired many veterinarians to pursue excellence by pushing beyond conventional ideas of avian medicine, to developing innovative techniques, to willingly share their knowledge and expertise, to promote avian medicine, and to become deeply involved in our AAV.
Dr. Zantop passed away on October 13, 2011. In recognition of his substantial contributions to AAV and avian medicine and surgery, the Association of Avian Veterinarians established the Donald W. Zantop Memorial Lecture to annually recognize the achievements of an AAV member during the early part of their career, who exhibits many of the qualities recognized in Dr. Zantop. The Conference Committee choses the a presenter at the Annual Conference who best exemplifies the qualities of an emerging leader and mentor. The recipient is listed in the proceedings and receives a $200 honorarium.
