2017 AAV ANNUAL CONFERENCE SCHOLARSHIP
The Association of Avian Veterinarians (AAV) is pleased to announce the availability of one paid scholarship (free conference registration, one wet lab AND up to $2,000 for travel expenses) to assist a veterinarian with financial need from a country outside the United States of America and Canada to attend the annual conference of the Association of Avian Veterinarians. To apply for the annual conference scholarship, applicants should follow the instructions as listed below.
This year, the conference, which is comprised of several scientific sessions, master classes, round table discussions and wet labs, will be held July 29-August 2 at the Washington Hilton, Washington, DC, USA. The conference language is English, with no simultaneous translations being available. At the time of registration, the scholarship recipient may register for one wet lab free of charge. In addition to registration to the conference, which is valued at approximately $900 US, the full scholarship includes up to $2,000 US for economy travel, meals and up to six nights of lodging in the conference hotel. The total value of this award is thus approximately $2,900 US.
After the recipient has booked the flight and room in the conference hotel, the AAV Office will transfer the $2,000 to the recipient's account. The recipient shall pay for meals not provided during the conference him/herself. Funds not used from the $2,000 account shall remain the property of the AAV.
Applicants must be veterinarians who are actively involved in avian medicine, aviculture and/or avian conservation work in their country and have a demonstrated dedication to improve the standard of avian medicine, both now and in future. Key selection criteria for the scholarship are:
- Demonstrated interest in avian medicine and surgery, aviculture and/or avian conservation work.
- Demonstrated dedication to improving the standard of avian veterinary work in his/her country in the past and in future.
- Demonstrated ability and skills to educate/share information.
- Submitted proposal for dissemination of information gained at conference, thereby demonstrating the extent of the impact and benefits that attending the conference would have for the applicant, the applicants co-workers, and for avian medicine on a regional and/or national level.
- Demonstrated proficiency in the English language.
- Demonstrated financial need. Applicants in a training position (e.g. internship/residency/masters/PhD) and/or from a developing nation are given higher priority in receiving the grant.
- Current membership in AAV.
Applicants must supply the following information in English using the online application:
1. Motivation letter addressing:
- your interest in avian medicine and surgery, aviculture and/or avian conservation
- your dedication to improve the standard of avian veterinary work in your country or region in the past and in future
- your ability and skills to educate/share information
- your financial need
2. A short biography of the applicant (maximum of 250 words) which will be published in the AAV Newsletter upon receiving and accepting the scholarship.
3. Resume which includes at least the following information:
- Veterinary college and year of graduation
- Current Affiliation (Institution or Practice)
- Current and past professional activities (list in reversed chronological order)
- Previous training and education
- Organization membership (professional, scientific, conservation)
- Number of years of membership of AAV in consecutive years prior to this year’s conference
- Previous attendances to AAV or related conferences (either in the USA or in Europe or Australia)
- Presentations held at AAV or related conferences (either in the USA or in Europe or Australia)
- Poster presentations at AAV or related conferences (either in the USA or in Europe or Australia)
- List of scientific publications related to avian medicine
4. Proposal for dissemination of information gained at the conference demonstrating the extent of the impact and benefits that attending the conference would have for you, your co-workers, and for others involved with avian medicine in your region and/or country.
5. Two supporting letters of recommendation (e.g. from local conservation organizations or current active members of the AAV)
Applications must be submitted electronically to the AAV Executive Director using the online application no later than April 1, 2017.
It is the applicant's responsibility to verify receipt of application. If recipient has not been formally notified of receipt of their application within 7 days of email submission, they should contact the Executive Director directly at firstname.lastname@example.org or 1-201-446-2442. Awarded recipients will be notified via fax or email by May 1, 2017. Scholarships may not be shared.
The AAV-international committee will rank applications based on the following factors: Motivation letter, resume, supporting letters, and fulfillment of the key application criteria as mentioned above. The first place applicant will receive the full scholarship.
The successful applicant should send the AAV acceptance of the scholarship within two weeks after notification. The recipient should purchase their own airline ticket and book their hotel room. Once proof of booking of the airline ticket and hotel room has been received by the Executive Director, Robert Groskin, the scholarship money will be transferred to the recipient's account.
Recipients are required to identify themselves to the Executive Director upon their arrival at the conference and are required to attend the AAV membership meeting, for which date and time will be announced later.
Recipients are furthermore required to write a report of their experience of the conference (maximum 500 words) which will be published no later than 2 newsletters after the conference. If this requirement is not met, AAV may require scholarship funds to be refunded to the association.
